Con frecuencia leemos que las tecnologías de comunicación están provocando profundas transformaciones en todas las dimensiones de nuestra vida. Sin duda dichas tecnologías vienen colaborando en la transformación del mundo. La máquina de vapor, la electricidad, el teléfono, el carro, el avión, la televisión, el computador, las redes electrónicas, contribuyeron en la extraordinaria expansión del capitalismo, en el fortalecimiento del modelo urbano y en la disminución de las distancias. Pero, en esencia, las tecnologías no son las que transforman la sociedad, antes bien, el agente transformador es la utilización que se hace de ellas en el modo de producción capitalista, que busca el lucro, la expansión, la internacionalización de todo lo que tiene un valor económico.
We often read that communication technologies are bringing about profound changes in all dimensions of our lives. No doubt these technologies are helping to transform the world. The steam engine, electricity, telephone, car, airplane, television, computer, electronic networks, contributed to the extraordinary expansion of capitalism, in strengthening the urban model and the reduction of distances. But in essence, the technologies are transforming society, rather, the agent of change is the use made of them in the capitalist mode of production that seeks to profit, expansion, internationalization of everything has an economic value.
